Meet Salim G. Sfeir

Early Life and Education
Sfeir was born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon. After attending l’Institut des Frères des Écoles Chrétiennes in Beirut, from 1950 to 1964, he moved to Montreal, Canada, where he graduated in 1969 from the University of Montreal with a BSS degree in Economics. In 1971 he received his MBA Masters in Business Administration from the University of Detroit, USA. As instructor in Economics, Finance and Marketing, from 1972 over a span of 10 years, Sfeir lectured at the Lebanese University, Beirut University College (presently LAU), Haigazian College and l’Université Saint-Joseph, Centre d’Études Bancaires. This period also witnessed a number of his publications: Economic Development of Lebanon (1968), Lebanon, Crossroad of the Middle East (1975), Economic Review of the Arab World (1976), Working Capital Financing (1978).
He embarked on his journey of intentions and elbowed his way through four decades of a banking career when he joined Bank of Nova Scotia, Beirut, in 1971. From 1980 - 1983 he occupied the position of Deputy General Manager with Banque de la Meditérranée. He founded Wedge Bank (M.E.) in 1983 and was appointed General Manager and Member of the Board of Directors. From 1985 till 1991 Sfeir held the positions of General Manager & Chief Executive Officer, Wedge Bank (Switzerland) S.A., Geneva; in 1992 was appointed Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of  Wedge Bank (M.E.).
In 1993 he organized and implemented Management Buy-in of Bank of Beirut leading it to develop into one of the top major five banks in Lebanon, through strategic alliances, bank acquisitions, and expansion into 4 continents.
Sfeir has been a Member of the Board of the Association of Banks in Lebanon since 2006. From 2009 to 2015 he was Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees, The Lebanese American University (LAU), and from 2010 till 2014, Vice-Chairman of AMIDEAST (American Friends of the Middle East).
In 2014, he was nominated Vice-Chairman, World Patriarchal Maronite Foundation (WPF) founded by His Eminence Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros El Rai, Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and all the East. In 2015 he was elected member to the Board of Trustees, the University of the Holy Spirit, Kaslik (USEK).
Honors – Vatican
2017 Inauguration of the Library of the Pontifical Maronite College in Rome, where a commemorative plate bearing Dr. Sfeir’s name was placed, with the aim  to restore and preserve the ancient heritage of the Maronite Church
