Back to school tips

A new school year is approaching and your child is probably excited about getting new school supplies but for many budget-conscious families, this time of year could also represent a financial challenge.

We put together the following tips to help you be an organized shopper and save some money:

Take inventory
Go through your child’s closets and school supplies and make a list of what is missing.

Set a budget and stick to it
Decide how much you are willing to spend to get your child ready for school. It may help you to look at how much you spent last year and compare.  Consider where you think you may have overspent and where you should have spent more.

Make a list
Make a list of items that your child is missing and list them in order of priority. Some items can wait until school starts so take advantage of that to avoid spending all at once.

Talk to your child
Let your child know what to expect. We all want our children to have the latest and coolest school supplies but it’s important to note that certain supplies are a fad that your child will bore off within the first month of school. If you rather spend less on the item, manage your child’s expectations.

Keep an eye out for specials
Several stores have back to school offers. Keep an eye out for those offers and take advantage of them.

Use your credit card wisely
The laptop you bought your child a few years ago might be freezing and crashing a lot, but that’s no excuse for you to pay the entire amount on your credit card if you are certain you will not be able to pay it off.

Happy shopping!
